Activities on Purpose

KYC Scholars participate in a plethora of activities that teach a multitude of practical skills.
-
Cooking without a Kitchen
This weekly activity allows the students to experience food from different cultures, while also learning the basic principles of food handling. Learning how to use a knife, how to properly sanitize, and how to mise en place are life skills that every scholar can use.
-
Arts and Crafts
Engaging their creativity through a variety of media, scholars are introduced to many different arts and craft projects. To date, scholars have pressed their own t-shirts, worked with clay to make flowers, created their own jewelry, crocheted pot holders, and woven baskets.
-
Sports
With our back parking lot, our scholars have embraced the ability to try out many sports. Between 3-on-3 basketball, pickleball, badminton, volleyball, and cornhole, we have sports for various levels of skill.
-
Robotics
Hosted by the Half Hollow Hills Robotics Club, scholars have had the opportunity to contribute to the design of robots. Also, scholars have had opportunity to operate one!
-
Lock-Ins
Bringing back a youth tradition, lock-ins are one event that our scholars eagerly anticipate! An all-nighter with snacks, competitions, video games, and movies- there is something for everyone. Whether you want to have an all night dance-off or just relax watching anime, just remember to wake up for breakfast! Our scholars get to have a night out in a safe space while having time to develop friendships and put school work aside for a while.
-
Blessings in a Box
This is our largest community service project of the year. This event brings together KYC scholars, parents, volunteers, and supporters to serve our typically forgotten neighbors- unhoused families, foster children, and children in facilities. We collect practical items (such as toiletries) as well as traditional holiday gifts to provide for our neighbors in need. They also attend a sit-down dinner full of activities and music. Our scholars participate to learn what it means to serve others and to understand why volunteer work is so important.
These are only a handful of activities that KYC does with our scholars. We also play board games and video games, host barbeques, and attend field trips! KYC is more than just academics- we have a lot of fun, too!
